Nobody reads this article for fun, so straight to the point: the first ten minutes after a crash determine most of the financial and legal outcome. Save this page offline before you ride.
The steps below assume a typical tourist scenario — minor-to-moderate crash, possibly another vehicle involved.
First 10 minutes
1. Get off the road — secondary hits are how small crashes become big ones. 2. Check people first, bikes second. 3. Photograph everything before anything moves: positions, damage, road surface, the other vehicle's plate. 4. If anyone is hurt, call 1669 (medical emergency) — ambulances in Phuket are fast. Tourist police: 1155 (English-speaking).
Do not sign anything at the roadside, and do not hand your passport to anyone.
Police, insurance, hospital
For any crash involving another vehicle or an injury, a police report is what your insurer will ask for first — go to the district station the same day. Call your travel insurer's emergency line early; they will direct you to a partner hospital (Bangkok Hospital Phuket and Bumrungrad-affiliated clinics handle most tourist claims). Keep every receipt.
Remember the chain from our license guide: no motorcycle license usually means no travel-insurance payout. This is the moment that rule becomes real money.
Dealing with the rental shop
Call the shop before towing or repairs. A fair shop (ours included) walks you through it: the bike carries compulsory third-party insurance (Por Ror Bor), damage is priced from a transparent list, and your deposit covers the excess — not an invented total-rebuild. If a shop demands your passport back only after a giant cash payment, that is a scam pattern; involve the tourist police at 1155 without hesitation.
FAQ
What number do I call after an accident in Phuket?
1669 for medical emergencies, 1155 for tourist police (English spoken), 191 for regular police. For minor no-injury crashes, photos plus a same-day police report is the standard route.
Will the rental's insurance cover me?
Every legally registered bike carries compulsory Por Ror Bor covering third-party injury. Damage to the bike itself is normally on you up to the deposit unless you took extra cover — ask what applies before you ride.
The other driver fled. What now?
Photograph the scene, note witnesses, file the police report anyway — hit-and-run reports matter for insurance, and Phuket's CCTV coverage catches a surprising share of runners.
