Thailand Helmet Law: Rules and Fines

Thai law requires a helmet on both the rider and the passenger, everywhere, always. Phuket enforces it more actively than most provinces because it leads national accident statistics — checkpoints treat a bare head as a guaranteed fine.

The law is the boring part; the physics are the persuasive part. Phuket's roads mix rain-polished concrete, sand drifts and tourists who learned to ride yesterday.

What the law says

Rider and passenger must both wear fastened helmets. The fine rose in recent years to up to ฿2,000 per bare head, and police can fine the driver additionally for carrying an unhelmeted passenger. Children are not exempt — a child on a scooter needs a child-size helmet, and Thai courts treat an adult helmet flopping on a child's head as no helmet at all.

The island standard is a ฿150 half-shell that has survived three rainy seasons. We stock proper certified helmets in sizes S–XL, replace them after any impact, and include two free with every bike. Buckle it every single ride, including the 400-metre run to 7-Eleven. Phuket's accident data is unambiguous: the short, casual, helmet-on-the-elbow trips are where heads meet kerbs. It is also exactly the trip on which a checkpoint appears out of nowhere.
