Checkpoints are a routine part of riding in Phuket, especially November–April. They are not a shakedown of tourists specifically — Thai riders get stopped just as often — but tourists without documents fund a good share of the fine book.
Knowing the usual locations, times and rules turns a checkpoint from a holiday-ruiner into a 30-second wave-through.
Where and when
The most consistent spots: Karon Circle, Chalong Circle approaches, the Patong hill road on the Kathu side, Thepkrasattri Road heading north, and central Phuket Town intersections. Peak hours are 09:00–11:00 and occasionally late afternoon; checkpoints are rare after dark and in heavy rain.
Riding from Karon or Chalong? Assume you will meet one this week.
What they check and current fines
Three things in order: helmet, license, and sometimes the bike's registration/tax sticker (that one is the rental shop's job — all our bikes carry current tax). Typical fines: no helmet ฿400–2,000, no valid motorcycle license ฿500–1,000, and both can apply at once. Fines are paid at the roadside desk or the police station with a receipt — insist on the receipt.
How to pass in 30 seconds
Helmet on and buckled (passenger too), license + IDP in a phone case or wallet you can reach, smile, hand it over, wait. Arguing convention law at the roadside never works; a receipt and a calm face always do. If your documents are in order, the entire stop takes less time than a 7-Eleven queue.
FAQ
Do police target tourists in Phuket?
Checkpoints stop everyone. Tourists get fined more often simply because they more often ride without helmets or licenses — with documents in order, you will usually be waved through.
Can I pay the fine on the spot?
There is usually an official roadside desk issuing receipted fines. Always take the receipt — it also covers you at other checkpoints the same day.
What if the police keep my license?
For most tourist fines they do not. If a license is held pending payment, the receipt tells you where to pay and collect it — usually the district station the same day.
