Everyone on Phuket's roads was a first-timer once, mostly on these exact streets. Scooters are genuinely easy — twist and go — but the first day has a learning curve, and Phuket adds left-side traffic, hills and rain to it.

This is the guide we wish every first-time renter read before messaging us.

Before you arrive

Sort the license first: a motorcycle category plus IDP (the rules). Choose a small automatic — Honda Click 125, Scoopy or Giorno class; skip anything sporty for week one (our beginner bike guide compares them). Book delivery to your hotel rather than riding out of a busy pickup point as your first-ever manoeuvre.

At pickup: the 5-minute checklist

Film a walkaround video (your anti-scam armour). Test both brakes rolling the bike by hand, check tyre tread and horn, confirm the fuel type on the cap, adjust mirrors before moving, and have the staff show you the seat lock and fuel cap — every model differs and fumbling at a pump is how phones get dropped.

Your first 30 minutes and the rules that keep you alive

Do the first kilometres on a quiet street early in the morning — practice smooth throttle, both-brakes stops and slow U-turns. Then the habits: left side of the road, assume nobody sees you, both brakes always (front-only grabs are the classic tourist crash), no phone in hand, helmet buckled even for 400 metres. Rain: first 10 minutes are the slipperiest, painted lines become ice — pull into a café, monsoon showers pass fast.

Give yourself two days inside your beach area before attempting the hills. Kata Viewpoint on day one is how souvenir scars happen.

FAQ

Legally you need a motorcycle license, which implies training at home first — and that is genuinely the safe order. Automatic scooters are easy, but Phuket traffic is not a beginner classroom.

A 110–125cc automatic: Honda Click, Scoopy or Giorno. Light, forgiving brakes, easy to park. Avoid sporty 150cc+ bikes and anything manual for your first week.

Phuket has real risks — traffic, hills, rain — but the incident pattern is consistent: no helmet, no license, alcohol, or first-day overconfidence. Remove those four factors and your risk drops dramatically.
