Most Phuket rentals are honest small businesses. The minority that are not have refined three or four classic tricks over the years — and every single one is beatable with ten minutes of prevention.
Here are the schemes, the warning signs, and the pre-rental checklist that makes you a hard target.
The classic schemes
The passport hostage: shop holds your passport as deposit, then “finds” damage at return and names a price for the passport's release. The phantom scratch: pre-existing damage attributed to you — thrives when no photos were taken at pickup. The vanishing deposit: vague deductions (“cleaning”, “late return”) nibble your cash deposit. The stolen-bike setup: rare but real — a bike “stolen” with the shop's spare key, then charged to you at full price.
Warning signs before you pay
No written contract or one only in Thai; refusal to accept a cash deposit instead of a passport; no interest in your license (see why that matters); prices dramatically below market (฿150/day for a new PCX is bait); and bikes parked with worn tyres and dangling brake levers — the shop that skips maintenance skips ethics.
The 10-minute defence
Film a slow video around the bike at pickup — panels, mirrors, exhaust, odometer — with the staff visible in frame. Photograph the contract. Never leave a passport: a copy plus cash deposit is standard practice at legitimate shops (it is how we work). Use your own lock for street parking at night. At return, be present for the inspection and get the deposit back before leaving the counter.
FAQ
Is it normal for a shop to keep my passport?
It is common but you should refuse. Legitimate shops accept a passport copy plus a refundable cash deposit. Your passport is Thai-law-required ID you must carry — and it is the scammer's favourite leverage.
What deposit is normal in Phuket?
฿2,000–5,000 for scooters and ฿10,000+ for big bikes, refundable in full at return. Get the amount written in the contract.
The shop charges me for a scratch I did not make. What now?
Show your pickup video, refuse to pay, and if pressed call the tourist police at 1155 — their presence resolves most invented-damage disputes within minutes.
