Thailand legally splits nothing by engine size — one motorcycle license covers a Scoopy and an Africa Twin alike. The real gatekeepers are rental shops and insurers, and the good ones gatekeep hard, because a 100+ hp motorcycle on holiday roads is an unforgiving combination.
Here is what you actually need to rent big in Phuket, and why the rules protect you.
The legal baseline
Same as any bike: a motorcycle license from your home country plus an IDP with the A category (IDP details). Thailand's own licensing added a big-bike endorsement for 400cc+ for Thai license holders; for tourists the home-country full motorcycle license remains the standard. An A2-restricted European license technically covers only up to its home restriction — insurers notice this even when shops do not.
What serious shops require
For our 500cc+ fleet — Africa Twin, R 1250 GS, the Ducatis — we ask for a full (unrestricted) motorcycle license and honest answers about recent riding: what you ride at home, how recently, whether you have toured. This is not bureaucracy; it is us not handing 230 kg of adventure bike to someone whose last motorcycle was a 125 in 2019. Deposits run ฿10,000–30,000 by model, and full damage cover is worth its price on these machines.
Reality checks before you book
Phuket is a demanding place to reacquaint yourself with big bikes: heavy traffic, sudden rain, sand in corners. If you are rusty, take a CB500X or Rebel 500 for two days first — the step up after is seamless. Insurance reality: ride within your license category or every policy in the chain fails at once (the accident guide shows what that means in baht). And the best big-bike riding is off-island: Phang Nga and beyond.
FAQ
Do I need a special license for bikes over 400cc in Thailand?
As a tourist: a full motorcycle license from home plus an IDP with category A. Thai law does not split by size for foreign licenses, but restricted (A2) licenses only cover their home limits — and insurers check.
What deposit do big bikes require?
฿10,000–30,000 depending on the model at reputable shops. Anyone renting a GS-class bike with a ฿3,000 deposit is pricing risk somewhere else — usually into damage claims.
Can a big bike leave Phuket?
Yes — our big bikes are welcome in Phang Nga, Krabi and Khao Sok at no extra cost. State the route at booking so paperwork and insurance match the trip.
