Phuket is 48 km top to bottom — small enough to loop in a day, big enough that the loop feels like a journey. The full circuit runs about 130 km and shows you five different islands: party coast, wild north, sleepy east, old town, temple south.
This is the itinerary we give friends who have exactly one free day and a full tank.
Morning: west coast north
07:30 from Patong (or join the loop anywhere): north through Kamala and Surin — stop at Laem Singh viewpoint — then the quiet stretch past Bang Tao to Banana Beach for the first swim while it is empty (details in the hidden beaches guide). Continue to Sarasin Bridge at the island's tip — the mangrove views deserve ten minutes — then south along the flat, fast airport coast, planes landing overhead at Mai Khao.
Midday: the east nobody sees
Cut inland through Thalang, pause at the Heroines Monument roundabout culture stop, and take the east-coast route south: rubber plantations, fishing piers, zero tour buses. Lunch in Old Phuket Town — hokkien mee on Thalang Road, coffee in a shophouse (Town guide). Optional: the 5-minute Khao Rang viewpoint above town.
Afternoon: temples and the sunset finish
South via Wat Chalong, then the Big Buddha climb if legs and brakes agree (route notes). Rawai seafood as the late-lunch backup, Ya Nui for the second swim, and finish at Promthep Cape for sunset — you will arrive exactly as the light turns gold if you left Town by 15:30. Home along the west coast in the warm dark: Kata, Karon, over the hill, done. 130 km, ฿80 of fuel, one island fully understood.
FAQ
How long does the full Phuket loop take?
11–12 hours with swims and proper stops (07:30–19:00), or 6–7 hours as a pure riding loop. Clockwise, starting north, times the sunset finish at Promthep perfectly.
What bike do I need for the loop?
Any well-maintained 125cc handles it solo. Two-up or comfort-minded, take a PCX/NMAX class or a maxi-scooter — the ADV 160 is ideal if you add the Banana Beach path.
How much fuel will I use?
About ฿70–90 total — one fill-up. Top up in Thalang or Phuket Town mid-loop; the southern peninsula has no stations past Rawai.
