Thirty minutes from the beaches hides a different island: pastel Sino-Portuguese shophouses, third-wave coffee in century-old pharmacies, and food that explains why UNESCO lists Phuket as a City of Gastronomy.
On a scooter the Town day works perfectly — free parking, easy hops between quarters, and the viewpoint finish the bus tours miss.
Getting there and parking
From Patong over the Kathu hills: 40 minutes. From Kata/Karon via Chalong: 35. From Rawai: 30. Park free along Phang Nga Road or Dibuk Road — the grid is compact and walkable from there. Sunday evenings Thalang Road itself becomes the walking-street market: park one street over, never on Thalang.
The walking core
Thalang Road and Soi Romanee are the postcard: shuttered shophouses, murals, the island's photogenic peak before 10:00. Coffee culture runs deep here — the old-pharmacy cafés on Thalang and the roasters on Phang Nga Road beat anything at the beaches. For food: Michelin-listed hokkien mee institutions, moo hong pork belly, and oh-aew shaved ice for the heat. Budget ฿300 and arrive hungry.
Beyond the grid
Ride 5 minutes up Khao Rang Hill for the terrace-café view over the old town roofs — the day's best finish. The adventurous add Monkey Hill (higher, wilder, macaques with opinions about open bags). Markets: the Sunday Thalang walking street is the event, but weekday-evening Chillva Market on Yaowarat Road gives the same street-food hit without the crush. Combine the Town with Ao Yon beach on Cape Panwa for a full east-side day.
FAQ
Where do I park a scooter in Old Phuket Town?
Free along Phang Nga and Dibuk Roads, plus covered free parking at Central Floresta and Big C nearby. On Sunday evenings avoid Thalang Road entirely — it becomes the walking street.
Is Old Town worth it compared to the beaches?
It is the strongest cultural half-day on the island: architecture, the best coffee scene, and Michelin-listed street food thirty minutes from your beach chair.
When is the Sunday walking street?
Thalang Road, Sunday roughly 16:00–22:00. Come at opening for photos and food before the 18:00 crowds peak.
