Fuel is the cheapest part of riding in Phuket — a full scooter tank runs ฿60–90 in 2026 and covers 150–250 km. The only things worth knowing are which nozzle to pick and where the stations thin out.
Ninety seconds of reading saves you the two classic mistakes: E20 in a bike that dislikes it, and an empty tank on the Nai Harn peninsula.
Which fuel your rental takes
Nearly every rental scooter runs Gasohol 95 (the purple pump at PTT) — that is what we hand bikes over with and what is written on our fuel caps. Gasohol 91 (green) is fine for most small automatics too. E20 is cheaper but not recommended for many scooter engines; premium 95 non-gasohol is unnecessary. When in doubt: Gasohol 95, every time. At 2026 prices expect roughly ฿38–42/litre — a PCX's 8-litre tank fills for about ฿90 and lasts 300+ km.
Where the stations are (and are not)
PTT, Shell, Bangchak and PT stations line every main road in the tourist belt — Patong, Kata, Chalong Circle, Thepkrasattri Road — most open 24/7 with card payment. The gaps: the Promthep/Nai Harn peninsula past Rawai has no big station, the Kamala–Surin hill stretch is dry, and the Big Buddha road obviously has nothing. Fill up before sunset rides south.
The green bottles on the roadside
Those Singha bottles of amber liquid at mom-and-pop stands are petrol — usually Gasohol 91 at ฿50–60 per bottle. As an emergency litre to reach a real station, they are fine and have saved many holidays. As a habit, skip them: the markup is 40% and storage quality varies. The bottle stand's real value is telling you a proper station is never far in Phuket.
FAQ
What fuel does a rental scooter take in Thailand?
Gasohol 95 is the safe default for every scooter we rent — the purple nozzle at PTT stations. Gasohol 91 also works for most small automatics. Avoid E20 unless the fuel cap explicitly allows it.
How much does it cost to fill a scooter in Phuket in 2026?
Around ฿38–42 per litre; a 5.5-litre Click tank fills for ~฿60, an 8-litre PCX for ~฿90. A tank covers 150–300 km depending on the bike.
Are the roadside bottle stands safe to use?
As a one-litre emergency to reach a station, yes. Routinely, no — expect a 40% markup and variable quality. Phuket has enough 24/7 stations that you rarely need them.
